The hobby of Warhammer 40,000 can seem kind of daunting at first glance and understandably so. Warhammer 40,000 is a miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop. The game uses models, terrain, rolling dice, and using rules specific to your army. I am going to list some good beginner items to start with when just getting into the hobby. Also I believe these items go for any hobby involving models/painting as well not just Warhammer 40k. Most of if not all of these items can be found on Amazon.

  1. Model Kit
To start you first need the physical model or pieces to build said model. This part is pretty self explanatory as the rest of the items on this list would be pointless if you don't have the plastic kit to use them on. Some models come in a plastic sprue while others come fully built and ready to start painting. There are different types of material that models can be made from. The most common are usually plastic and resin. I believe plastic to be the preferred material as it is more durable and easier to work with than resin. Resin requires a bit of extra care and preparation. There is one more material and that is metal however, that is a special case so I will only be focusing on plastic and resin materials.

  2. Hobby Knife
This is the tool that will be used the most in the building process as it is very versatile. The knife can be used for cutting plastic out of a sprue or touching up plastic ends that result from the molding. It can also be used for making custom alterations to the models physical makeup. 3. Plastic Cement/Super Glue
I think plastic cement works very well as it melds the plastic together instead of sticking together however it will not work with resin or if you are trying to magnetize the model. In those cases super glue will be required. These will be used to put the pieces together to create the full model. Plastic Cement

  4. Spray Paint/Paint/Paintbrushes
I put all of these items together as they all fall into the same category and will most likely be purchased together. The spray paint is used to prime the model to give it a surface for the modeling paint to stick to. Depending on the paint scheme color of the primer can change. Personally I prefer to get the color I am base coating my models in to begin with as it saves a lot of time and gets full coverage of the model otherwise I prefer black. The model paint can depend on the model you have I use Games Workshop's brand of Citadel Paint for Warhammer 40k but there are alternatives if preferred such as Vallejo paints. Next brushes will be needed to apply the paint to the model. There are lots of brands of brushes so sometimes it can be difficult to know which is the right set. An affordable set and brand I have found success with is the Golden Maple detail paint brush set.

These next few items I consider to be luxury items as you can get away just with what is listed above however I did find the following helpful.

  5. Desk Lamp
I found this to be incredibly useful over just your average room lighting as it helps with being able to see the small fine details. This is especially useful to have for painting as it lessens eye strain and allows you to easily locate spots on the model missing paint. Does not need to be fancy by any means. The one I use is a Lampat LED Desk Lamp.

  6. Cutting Mat
A self healing cutting mat is nice to have as it creates a nice clear workspace. I have used newspaper and cardboard before to paint and model before and it works fine but having something you don't really need to replace each time is a quality improvement in my book. Cutting Mat
  7. Hobby Clippers
I added this item as most of the time I need to cut plastic out of a sprue and the hobby knife works well enough for that but having these speeds up the process dramatically and lessens the chance of making a wrong cut however the hobby knife will still be needed after to shave of the small plastic edges left from the sprue. All these items make a good start and tries to be a bit more affordable than most however that being said the hobby is in general expensive. If you have become dedicated to this sort of thing and are looking for the next improvement I would look into getting an air brush. I only recommend this tool for those who have a decent amount of experience and time put in the hobby as they are expensive and can be difficult for beginners to learn how to use. Other than that I would just focus on getting new models that interest and excite you.
