Photo Essay on H. P. Lovecraft

Hey everyone, this is my Photo Essay project. Just wanna say that I was excited to use Photoshop and at the same time was somewhat lost while working on this. It took me a bit to figure out what I was doing but I think I am happy with the results. I have been wanting to use Photoshop more for drawing specifically so most of the edits I did were freehand. My topic was the author's writing career as he grew up.

H. P. Lovecraft 9 years old
Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890.

Around 5 and a half years old Lovecraft started having nightmares that would, later on, appear in his writing.

Lovecraft first started his literary works at the age of 7 dealing with poems that restyled the Odyssey and other mythological tales.

At 8 years old he had developed an interest in the sciences, mostly in astronomy and chemistry.

H. P. Lovecraft 25 years old

Lovecraft started out as a potential journalist and joined the United Amateur Press Association in 1914.

While he had experimented in fiction writing early on, Lovecraft became more deliberate in writing stories around 1917.

In 1923 Weird Tales, a horror magazine, bought some stories written by Lovecraft, giving him his first real literary success.

The Call of Cthulhu came out in 1928 in Weird Tales. This story is the best example of Lovecraft's genre of cosmic horror.

H. P. Lovecraft 43 years old

Lovecraft was barely able to support himself during his final years.

He died of cancer on March 15, 1937, in Providence, Rhode Island.

He had written at least 60 short stories in his short lifetime.

He has gained more fame in his death than he ever did during his life.

Update 10/18/2019
I got a lot of things done this week and I am excited to make the portfolio. I enjoyed seeing other people's picture stories and what you guys did with it. I enjoyed the picture story project as I got to use Photoshop a lot and I quite happy with my results. I am thinking about the next project and what I might do still not sure though. The only thing about this week that could have been better is if I got over my cold so I am hoping that will happen this weekend. Well that was my spiel and I hope everyone else had a productive week as well.

  1. Overall solid job on this project, man! I like the progressive green puddle slowly engulfing him. Not only this, but your page layout matches your infographic which is a nice, subtle, touch.

It's a shame that he gained more popularity after he died. That's how it seems to always work, though. When an artist or author dies, more people check out their work and it usually brings them more popularity. The same happened to X as well.

Again, good job on the edits!

  2. I love how you use the color theme in your picture story! It is awesome to see it still coming into play with your projects and they just all flow so well! I like seeing how H.P. Lovecraft has changed throughout his years. It gives me a slideshow type of vibe and your photo shop skills are great! I like how at first it looks swampy like and then the tentacles on the last picture come into play. Then I do like your use of text to explain more about H.P. Lovecraft to those who do not know who he is and that they can learn more about him! Awesome job on your picture stories!
